But with the right information and a clear plan, Norwich learner drivers can secure their test date with confidence. Here’s everything you need to know about booking your test, recent DVSA changes, and what this means for you.
How to book your driving test in Norwich, Norfolk

You can book online or by phone.

Book Online (Recommended)
  1. Visit www.gov.uk/book-driving-test.
  2. Click “Start now” and select your test type (car – manual or automatic).

  4. Choose your preferred test centre (e.g., Norwich, Thetford, King’s Lynn, or Yarmouth).
  5. Select an available date and time.

Norwich Driving Test Booking Checklist

Simple Checklist: What You Need to Book Your Test

Before you start your booking, make sure you have:
  • ✅ Your UK driving licence number (from your photocard licence)
  • ✅ A credit or debit card (Visa, MasterCard, Electron, or Delta)
  • ✅ Your instructor’s personal reference number (optional but recommended to check their availability)
  • ✅ A preferred test centre (e.g., Norwich, Thetford, King’s Lynn, or Great Yarmouth)
  • ✅ A preferred date range (you can book up to 24 weeks in advance)
  • ✅ Confirmation you’ve passed your theory test (you must have a valid theory pass certificate before booking)
  • ✅ Proof you’ve lived in Great Britain for at least 185 days in the last 12 months

Recent Changes to Test Booking

In 2025–2026, the DVSA introduced several key changes to tackle test backlogs and improve fairness:
  • Stricter identity checks: You must now book and manage your own test. Driving instructors can no longer book tests on your behalf, though they can still help you find available slots.gov+1
  • No waiting or cancellation lists: DVSA no longer holds waiting lists. You must check for cancellations yourself and act quickly when slots appear.gov+1
  • Test swaps and changes: You can change or swap your test date or centre, but only up to 10 working days before the test and subject to availability at nearby centres.gov+1
  • Earlier booking windows: You can now book up to 24 weeks in advance, giving you more flexibility to plan around your lessons and mock tests.

Why These Changes Were Made

The DVSA made these changes to:
  • Reduce unfair advantages from third-party booking services.
  • Ensure all learners have equal access to test slots.
  • Encourage learners to book only when they’re truly ready, reducing first-time failures and wasted appointments.

What This Means for Learners in Norwich

  • Plan ahead: With waiting times in Norfolk still averaging 20–24 weeks, book your test as soon as your instructor confirms you’re ready.
  • Use local knowledge: Norwich test centre is popular, but consider nearby centres like Thetford, King’s Lynn, or Great Yarmouth for earlier availability.
  • Check for cancellations: Log in regularly to the GOV.UK booking service to spot earlier slots released through cancellations.
  • Communicate with your instructor: Share your GOV.UK confirmation with your instructor so they can adjust your lesson plan and ensure you’re test-ready.

Learn to Drive in the Golden Triangle & Beyond

The Golden Triangle is one of Norwich’s most sought-after areas, known for its leafy streets, period homes, and excellent schools. It’s also a fantastic place to learn, with a mix of quiet residential roads and busier main routes that mirror real-world driving conditions.

Here’s how we support learners across key local areas:

Earlham (NR5)
A leafy, student-friendly suburb just west of the city centre, Earlham offers excellent links to the University of East Anglia, Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital, and Norwich via the B1108 (Earlham Road). Learners benefit from a mix of urban and suburban roads, with Blue Line bus services and quick access to the A47 for wider regional travel.

Eaton (NR4)
One of Norwich’s most affluent suburbs, Eaton is known for its elegant family homes, outstanding schools, and the 80-acre Eaton Park—ideal for early manoeuvre practice. With easy access to the A140 (Ipswich Road) and Colman Road, learners gain experience on key commuter routes to the city centre, UEA, and the hospital corridor.

Cringleford (NR9)
A picturesque village 3 miles south-west of Norwich, Cringleford sits on the River Yare and is bounded by the A11 and A47. Learners enjoy quiet village lanes, riverside drives, and exposure to dual carriageway approaches and roundabouts—perfect for building confidence on both rural and main roads.

Thorpe St Andrew (NR7)
Just two miles east of Norwich on the River Yare, Thorpe St Andrew combines historic charm with modern connectivity. The A1042 and A1242 provide direct links to the city centre and beyond, while the conservation area and riverside green offer scenic, low-traffic practice zones.

What Is the “Ready to Pass?” Campaign?

19/6/2026

Ready To Pass Campaign and why it matters
Ready to Pass (readytopass.campaign.gov.uk) is a UK government behavioural change campaign run by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) to help learner drivers understand when they’re truly ready to take their practical driving test. Launched in July 2022, it aims to reduce first-time test failures, cut test waiting times, and improve road safety by encouraging learners to delay their test if they aren’t fully prepared.
Get Ready to Pass

Key Objectives of the Campaign

The campaign focuses on three core goals:
  • Educate learners on test readiness: Explain what it means to be ready for your driving test and how to check your progress.despatch.blog.gov
  • Highlight the costs of testing too soon: Show learners the financial and emotional impact of failing because they booked their test too early.
  • Ensure tests go ahead: Provide practical advice on managing nerves, bringing the right documents, and avoiding last-minute cancellations.

What the Ready To Pass Website Offers

The Ready to Pass website provides free, practical resources for learners, parents, and driving instructors:
  • 27 driving skills: A detailed breakdown of the key skills you need to master to pass your test and become a safe, independent driver.readytopass.campaign.
  • Progress tracking: Guidance on the five levels of progress for each skill, helping you and your instructor monitor your test readiness.
  • Mock tests: Advice on when and how to take mock driving tests to build confidence and identify areas for improvement.
  • Managing test nerves: Tips and techniques to help you stay calm and focused on test day
  • Readiness checklist: A simple checklist to confirm you’re ready before booking your test (e.g., no prompts from your instructor, consistent mock test passes, ability to manage nerves).
  • Campaign toolkit: Downloadable resources for driving instructors, including videos, social media graphics, and email templates to promote the campaign with pupils.

Why Ready to Pass Matters

Research shows that around half of all learners fail their first driving test, often because they take it too soon. The Ready to Pass campaign helps learners avoid this by: youtube
  • Encouraging them to listen to their instructor’s expert advice on readiness.
  • Reminding them that they can change their test date for free if done at least 10 full working days before the test.readytopass.campaign.
  • Providing clear, actionable steps to build confidence and competence before test day.
  • roadsafetyknowledgecentre

How to Use the Website

Whether you’re a learner, parent, or instructor, you can:
  • Visit www.gov.uk/ready-to-pass to access free resources and check your readiness.despatch.blog+1
  • Follow DVSA on Instagram (@dvsagovuk) for tips, videos, and updates.despatch.blog.gov
  • Download and share campaign materials to reinforce the message that “ready drivers pass first time.”
For driving instructors, the campaign toolkit offers practical ways to start conversations with pupils about test readiness and set realistic expectations.
